Group activities should be organized and supervised by adults.
Go Fly a Kite!
(A Project for All Ages)
Items
Paper, Scissors, String, and a Stapler
Instructions
Click here to learn step by step, how to make your own kite.
Magnet Walk
(Pre-School/ School Age)
Objective
To discover what is magnetic and what is not
Items
Magnet wands or other types of magnets
Activity
Designate a space either indoors or outdoors and monitor the children while they test all kinds of things in their surroundings to determine what will stick to the magnet.
After a specific period of time (30-45 minutes) gather the children and have them report on different things they discovered that are magnetic.
I Spy Jars
(Pre-School Age)
Objective
To make a novelty item for long road trips
Items
Jars, favorite small items from home and birdseed
Activity
Number each jar; place several items in each jar and make a note of what is in each jar. Then fill each jar with birdseed and seal tightly. While on a road trip, have the child turn the jar upside down and around to reveal and call-out the items in each jar. Kids can compete to see how many items they can identify.
Marshmallow Construction
(Grade Level 3 or 4)
Objective
To explore the fundamental world of molecular structure with marshmallows and toothpicks
Items
Mini marshmallows, toothpicks, paper plates and masking tape
Activity
Ask the children if they are familiar with molecules. Chances are they are not so just touch on a fundamental introduction and show them an illustration of a molecule in a textbook or on the computer. It doesn’t have to be extremely scientific. Then tell them they are going to build their own molecules.
Illustrate how to make the initial shape of a square, rectangle or triangle out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Then, show them how to tape the base shape to the paper plate and build from there. Monitor the children while they build their own molecules. Of course, molecules can turn into castles and space ships as you build.
