Summer Camps 2008

Leap into art, science and crafts this summer with a hands-on exploration of the amazing world we live in. Campers can expect to get messy while learning to see the world with the vision of the artist and scientific explorer. Register early to guarantee a spot. Fees are $95 per person for members, $125 for non-members unless otherwise noted (see Wee Discoverers and Young Weird Science). Fees cover all costs of supplies, simple snacks, and instructors. Art Safari with Jan Fabin [Session 1a]

June 23-27, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for children entering grades 1-3

   In this hands-on art expedition, the intrepid young art trackers stalk the elements of design through various exotic and mysterious masterpieces of art. Once the elusive concepts are revealed and captured, the explorers mount their newly created treasures for display in the private collections of their families. 

 

Gardening Delights with Niki Wilson  [Session 1b]

June 23-27, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. entering grades 2-4

   There’s more to a garden than just dirt as you’ll find when you join hands with mother nature with these fun, creative activities: making garden stones and sculptures, composting for worms, planting seeds, making root cuttings, decorative pots, learning about insects and preparing your own flower/plant snacks to eat each day.

 

Wee Discoverers Go to Camp – Mark Lawson [Session 2a]

July 7-July 11, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for children 3-5 years with a parent/guardian

Fee: $70 for members, $100 for non-members

   What could be more fun than multiplying this popular program from one day to five? Each morning it’s a joyous jump into song, stories, art, simple science and outdoor adventure as you explore the city park – future home to the Discovery Museum. Join Mark for this relaxed, fun and educational get together.

 

Paleo Camp - Geb Bennett  [Session 2b]

July 7-July 11, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for children entering grades 4-6

   The Museum’s own paleo-curator takes you into the world of fossils and dinosaurs. Two field trips are included in the week, so that campers can collect their own fossils, clean and learn to classify them. (A parent or guardian is requested to accompany child on trips.)

 

Creative Writing Workshop – Werner Doerwaldt [Session 3a]

July 14-18, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for children entering grades 3-5

   Your imagination will soar with this introduction into the fine art of expressive writing. Develop your natural creativity through poetry and prose. Take home a hand bound and illustrated book.

 

“Art Outside the Box” – Mark Lawson  [Session 3b]

July 14-18 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for children entering grades 1 to 3

   More fun than Harold and his purple crayon, this highly popular camp is unlike any art class you’ve ever experienced. You’ll visit down town art studios, redo the mural on the Museum’s back outside wall, paint Mr. Mark’s car, tie dye tee shirts using squirt guns, face paint and loads more.

 

Young Weird Science – Mark Lawson [Session 4a]

July 21-25, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for children 5 - 6 years

Fee: $70 for members, $100 for non-members

   Mark brings bright wit, intelligence and laughter to the world of young children. Expect everything from bugs and gak to electrical circuits on mornings filled to the brim with energetic activities and projects.

 

Chess Etc. – Jim Moyer [Session 4b]

July 21-25, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for children entering grades 1-6

   Whether you’re new to chess or a long time aficionado, this is the place you’ll want to be for stimulating your gray matter, plotting strategies, making friends and having fun. We’ll be throwing in a few other games on the side.

 

Fantastical Fabric Fun with Emma Kirby-Glatkowski [Session 5a]

July 28 - August 3,  9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for children entering grades 1-3

   Make it, weave it, dye it, cut and stitch it. You’ll immerse yourself in hand made projects: dolls, puppets, accessories, quilt squares and more. Adult directed experience with a sewing machine is included.

 

Body sm“art”-Where Science and Art Dissect with Emma Kirby-Glatkowski [Session 5b]

July 28 -August 1, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. for children entering grades 3 and up

   Get the scoop on your body from the inside out. Each day you’ll move through another system of the marvelous machine that is your body and build your own models of how it all fits and works together. Your models will be displayed as a temporary exhibit in the Museum.

August 4-8, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. for children 9 and up

   Let your imagination and creative energy take center stage in this exploration of your dramatic side. Improvisations and scene work will highlight each day with information on scenery, and costuming. Presentation of skits will finalize the week’s work.
